Sunil Chhetri proves his Master-Class
As India began their preparations for next year’s Asian Cup with the Intercontinental Cup, a little over 2000 people turned up at the Mumbai Football Arena for their match against Chinese Taipei.
Unperturbed by the lack of support, India skipper Sunil Chhetri put forward another dominating display with a hat-trick as the Blue Tigers won the match 5-0.
The job for the day was done, but for a man who moved a step closer to 100 India caps, the response from the crowd was disappointing.
The game has a lot of fans in the country; sadly the national team is not the team they support. Premier League games, Champions League final or the World Cup – these events have witnessed a burgeoning viewership over the years.

The Indian Super League (ISL) also attracts a sizeable amount of people to the stadiums. A record number of people turned up for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup last year. However, for reasons unclear and incomprehensible, they have also looked away when it comes to supporting the national team.
But ahead of the match against Kenya on Monday, which was also going be Chhetri’s 100th game, the India skipper decided enough was enough. He posted a video on Twitter urging fans to come to stadiums to support their national team.
